The Future by the Sea Symposium – Call for Papers

The Future by the Sea symposium is connected to our IHOPE affiliated project Re-imagining the use of traditional watercraft in the Aegean Sea for a sustainable environment and economy. The event is organized in collaboration with Fundación Anfibia Colombia and the University of Helsinki. It will be a one-day event held online, over Zoom, on November 4th, 2023

The symposium – The Future by the Sea: Engaging with maritime archaeological research during the climate emergency – currently has an open call for papers linking maritime archaeology and climate change. The aim is to address how the study of the past in maritime archaeology can be used to contribute towards future climate action and climate resilience.

Possible topics could include:

  • Intangible maritime heritage
  • Past climate change adaptation by maritime societies
  • Traditional indigenous knowledge from coastal populations
  • Impacts of climate change on underwater cultural heritage

If you are interested in participating, please submit an abstract of 150-200 words by July 31st, 2023 to Katerina Velentza, including your name and affiliation. The symposium welcomes submissions from postgraduates and early career researchers.
