New IHOPE Paper on Sustainable Solutions for Future Water Needs by Lisa Lucero

IHOPE is proud to announce that our SSC Member Lisa Lucero has published a new paper on sustainable solutions for water management. Ancient Maya reservoirs, constructed wetlands, and future water needs was published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on October 9th, 2023.

The paper is significant in that it examines past Mayan water usage methods and proposes their usefulness for future attempts to sustainably control and manage quality water reserves.  By examining Mayan reservoirs and how they functioned as constructed wetlands, thereby ensuring water remained clean, Lucero highlights how future methods for managing water could be modelled on the sustainable solutions of our past.

Lisa J. Lucero is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
