New Book by SSC Member Lisa Lucero – Maya Wisdom and the Survival of Our Planet

We are pleased to announce that the book Maya Wisdom and the Survival of Our Planet by SSC Member Lisa J. Lucero will be released by Oxford University Press on January 27th.

Maya Wisdom and the Survival of Our Planet draws from Lucero’s extensive archaeological research in Belize, spanning over three decades. Lucero presents the Maya as early environmentalists, highlighting their sustainable practices that allowed them to thrive for millennia without depleting their resources.  The book explores the Maya’s worldview emphasizing collaboration with nature rather than domination, which led to diverse farming methods, water management systems, and a deep respect for the rainforest ecosystem. By merging past and present, she provides practical solutions for our current climate crisis arguing that bottom-up approaches are as crucial as top-down governmental actions. The book’s narrative style makes complex archaeological findings accessible to a general audience, offering concrete strategies for sustainable living inspired by Maya wisdom.
