New IHOPE Publication – Uncovering the Multibiome Environmental and Earth System Legacies of Past Human Societies

Three of IHOPE’s SSC members – Patrick Roberts, Vernon Scarborough, and Christian Isendahl – are co-authors on a new paper in the Annual Review of Environment and Resources. The paper is entitled “Uncovering the Multibiome Environmental and Earth System Legacies of Past Human Societies”.

While some geologists place the beginning of the Anthropocene in the mid-twentieth century, the authors argue that its environmental roots extend much deeper into history. The article emphasizes the significant alterations made to various biomes by human societies over time, showcasing how multidisciplinary approaches—such as archaeology, paleoecology, and historical ecology—can unveil intricate human-environment interactions. By examining these legacies, the authors provide valuable insights into how past human actions have shaped current environmental challenges. They advocate for using these historical perspectives to foster more equitable and sustainable relationships with the planet.
