Joan Martinez-Alier awarded the 2023 Holberg Prize
Joan Martinez-Alier is one of the leading world experts on environmental justice and has been awarded the 2023 Holberg Prize. He is professor emeritus at Technology Institute of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB), and he serves as co-director of the Atlas of Environmental Justice Project. The project documents global instances of environmental injustice in an explorable map format, increasing worldwide visibility of these issues through an accessible and informative interface.
In addition to his notable work on environmental justice, Martinez-Alier has authored a number of political ecology books, and recently he has been influential in the degrowth movement. He co-edited the 2007 book Re-Thinking Environmental History, which addresses the relation between ecosystems and and economics. One of his most notable publications is The Environmentalism of the Poor which concerns environmental justice and conflicts over environmental usage, particularly among the poor.
Joan Martinez-Alier will receive the award in Bergen, Norway on June 8th. Prior to the ceremony, on May 10th, the University of Bergen will host a symposium on the work of Martinez-Alier. The symposium will be held in person from 12 – 14. More details and the registration form can be found here.
